The heart of nanoscience and nanotechnology is the transition between single molecules and macroscopic molecular assemblies, where all system properties depend on the size of the systems. Together with American researchers at Arizona State University, and Chinese researchers at Nanjing, Fudan, and Shanghai universities, Jens Ulstrup has published a new approach to this transition based on electrical conductivity of a “smart” molecule, ferrocene (Fc) linked to two gold electrodes and using a quantum mechanically based technology, scanning tunneling microscopy. DTU Chemistry - Nano   February 2017
Together with Australian researchers at UTS, University of Sydney, and Australia’s leading producer of specialty chemicals, Advanced Molecular Technologies, Em. Professor Jens Ulstrup and the NanoChemistry group have described a new research field, where so-called “weak forces” are shown to be much more critical than previously thought, also in nanotechnology. The results apply generally but are particularly important for planar gold surfaces and gold nanoparticles covered by molecular monolayers of sulfur-containing molecules exploited broadly in catalysis and in medical diagnostics and therapy. “Weak” forces are not always so weak after all.

The results have just been published in the first issue of the new member of the high-profile Nature family, Nature Reviews Chemistry. For details, see:

A short story about gold and sulfur
DTU Chewmistry - Nano - gold and sulfurDTU Chemistry’s NanoChemistry group with Ph.D. student Arnab Halder and Professor (Emeritus) Jens Ulstrup have been engaged in research that explains the complex mechanisms when 1-100 nm gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) grow, and when broadly used sulfur compounds protect the NPs against destructive chemicals. In addition to resolving important aspects of gold-sulfur surface chemistry long sought after, such work has wider perspectives, as AuNPs are exploited broadly in catalysis and in medical diagnostics and therapy. The investigations were lead by Professors Jeff R. Reimers and Michael J. Ford, University of Technology of Sydney and Shanghai University, with participation of Professor Emeritus Noel S. Hush, University of Sydney and the NanoChemistry group at DTU Chemistry.

The results have just been published in the high-profile journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA (PNAS).
For details, see the paper: “Gold surfaces and nanoparticles are protected by Au(0)–thiyl species and are destroyed when Au(I)–thiolates form”

DTU Chemistry - Professor WangSummary of Prof. Wang’s talk:

He is leading a research group of over 30 graduate students and his current research interests includes graphene and its composites for electronic and energy storage devices, electrochromic devices based transition metal oxides and conducting polymer and novel functional fiber.

Supercapacitors, also known as electrochemical capacitors, are one kind of energy storage devices that can give higher power density than lithium ion batteries and higher energy density than conventional capacitors, and can be charged and discharged by extremely long cycle life (100,000 cycles) with highly safety, which is the ideal option for flexible energy storage devices. We fabricated pure or hybrid graphene films by the illumination reduction and filtration assembly methods, and did many deeply research works focus on the relationship between the micro-structure of the electrodes and the electrochemical performances. In addition, we fabricated some new structure devices, including all-solid-state supercapacitors, fiberlike supercapacitors and asymmetric supercapacitors. We also did some analysis and research work on the energy storage devices under bending condition.

A family of materials with an ability to change few of its original properties by the application of any external stimuli, such as stress, temperature, moisture, pH, electric and magnetic fields are called Smart Materials. We also developed a series of graphene-based smart materials, such as graphene based actuator. Using the strong water absorption/desorption capability of GO and good photothermal heating effects of rGO, a kind of graphene monolayer (GM) paper was prepared, which exhibited fast and powerful actuation performance in response to moisture, heat, and light. And it has potential in artificial muscles, robotic hands, and electromagnetic-free generators. We believe these graphene-based energy storage and smart materials could find a wide range of application areas including solving engineering problems with high efficiency, producing new generation wearable electronics and so on.
